Today is the first day of 2010, or as I like to call it “The Year of Ashley!” I mentioned this to my Dad today as we were sitting in the theater waiting for Avatar to start and he responded: “I thought every year was ‘The Year of Ashley!’.” Oh, Dad!

In a way he is right. I want every year to be my best year yet. Better than the year before. I like to think this year is special as I will be turning 30. Turning 30 creates a need to complete inside my head. Complete outstanding goals and lists. Because turning 30 means that I have definitely lived 1/3 of my life (and the way health problems run in my family, I might even be closer to the half-way point than I think).

But I have a month and a half before I hit the big 3-0, so lets focus on the now!

Last night I was blessed to have friends with whom I could ring in the New Year.

It was a blast to hang out with Erin and everyone else to see the ball drop in Market Square in downtown Knoxville!

Then today, it was off to the movies with the family and then running on the Greenbelt. What a great way to start 2010! Hope your start to the New Year was as great as mine.

My friend, Erin from the Knoxville Bookclub, got married today. It was a beautiful wedding and I was delighted to have a beautiful date, Carrie (also from Bookclub).

Day 6: The New Coffee Table

We finally own a coffee table. It was in Nadia and Josh’s “Rock Band Room" but now it is in our living room. Yeah!

Friends Are Friends Forever

Do you know the song lyrics? I won’t be singing them for you here, but the song came to my mind. It is because I got to see a dear friend of mine today, Steph. Steph and I go back to the years before we were teenagers. Before we really cared about boys. Before we really cared about any of the things that seem so important in our lives today. I can count on one hand the number of people I have known and remained friends with for that many years. With all the moving around I did growing up (3 elementary schools, 1 middle school, 2 high schools), that is a bigger accomplishment than you might think. So thank you Steph for being my friend, then and now.

Making Friends in New Places

Have you ever moved to a new place and was faced with making friends all over again? It sorta feels like the first day of school, but much much bigger. And unlike the first day of school, where you are presented with 20 – 30 potential friends all at your fingertips, a new place means seeking out people on your own. You have a city-wide scavenger hunt for friends! Add to the mix that you have moved to a small, Southern town, where every one you meet seems to have grown-up together or goes to the same church together. Or better yet, they are in the same mommy group (and you just happen to be childless). How do you make friends when you are starting out in a new place?

So far, my attempts have been via Meetup.com (God bless the internet and all its wonderful webpages). So far I have met a couple of wonderful ladies whose company I enjoy. But what other options are out there? What if you are not into the internet or are not into meeting strangers from a website? How do you make friends? Any suggestions?

You know what time it is…. time for another final to be over with! Yeah! Evidence was today and I feel

like I bombed that one too. Let’s hope that I did better than 20% of my classmates.

I don’t have asperations to be the best, just representable!

Good news is that my new ski clothes came in today! Yeah!!!!

I should also say that Erin and I had a blast this weekend going window shopping at Ikea and eating tasty fake-Mexican at Rubios!!! I was impressed that my burrito was so nicely wrapped that it stood up on its own:
