Archive for the “101 in 1001” Category

As you know, I am participating in 101 in 1001.  It is a project where you set 101 goals to complete in 1001 days.  Lots of goals, but lots of time to complete them in.  If you want to read more about it, check out the “rules” at DayZero or in my original post.  You can always see my progress at my 101 in 1001 page.

Since my last update in February, I have been able to cross a lot off my list.  I have traveled around the globe and moved cross-country.  I have read 15 books, graduated law school, passed the bar and spent time with my family. I have tried new foods, taken lots of pictures and exercised more. A lot has been accomplished in the months of March - October.  I have only had to quit one item - monthly hikes with the Husband.  When he is at home, he does not always want to spend time hiking. Sometimes he just wants to be lazy.  So I can’t count that completed, but don’t feel bad at all for the lack of completion.

I really enjoy having goals to work towards.  I need lists like this and appreciate the structure and guidance they provide.  I like the flexibility that comes in long term time frames.  And I feel accomplished when I can check things off.  Even more when it is all completed.

There are about 580 days left in my 101 in 1001.  That puts me almost half way through but only 38/101 goals completed, plus 19 “in progress” and one incomplete.  Time to kick it into gear and finish up some goals!

It has been an incredibly long time since I have updated you on the progress of my 101 in 1001. Check out my entire list at my 101 in 1001 page or find out what it is all about by reading my first post.

So here is the status on my list since my last post:

Oh the Places You’ll Go!
1. Finish visiting all 50 States (1/4). Completed Oregon 9/28-29/07.
I have made it to 2 more states as of 12/07: Maine and Rhode Island. That only leaves me with Alaska.
3. Go to the SF Zoo
I have actually been there twice, including Christmas Day 2007 (when Tatiana escaped and killed one guy while injuring 2 more).
4. Visit the Exploratorium
Completed 12/07 when my sister-in-law Susan and her husband Cam came for a visit. It was a blast and I highly recommend anyone trying it out. I know they seem to advertise that it is for kids, but us adult were there long after our parking time limit expired.

I guess you have noticed my lack of posts here lately. Really, my attentions have been turned elsewhere. I have been busy working on my major 101 in 1001 project: 365 Days. Yup, where I take one self-portrait a day for 365 Days (technically it will be 366 because of the upcoming leap year). So on top of law school, I am taking tons of pictures, mainly of myself. It is a very enlightening process. I feel like I am learning more about photography, but even more importantly, I am learning more about myself. So I plan on posting more, but that means that you will also probably be seeing more shots of me!

Day 60

So time to update on my 101 in 1001 since I have made progress on 2 and finished 1.

#1: Finish visiting all 50 States

I was able to go to one of my missing states last weekend: Oregon. My friend Erin and I headed to the town of Medford to do a little tax free shopping. It was a blast and we saw some beautiful scenery that just doesn’t exist in San Francisco.

Ashley in Oregon
Mt. Shasta

#8: Call my Sister once a month.

Talked to her for October! And I get to see her at the end of this month when we do the Epcot Food & Wine Festival with our Husbands!

#20: Read 50 books (non-textbooks)

I also finished my first book since starting this list: The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. It was such a powerful and moving book. Read it, if you can. I am interested to see how the movie will turn out. I think it will be very hard to capture the strength and sorrow that is found in this book. It is a tale of friendship, of loss and of redemption. I highly recommend it.

#31: Memorize 5 “go-to” recipes. & #32: Cook each “go-to” recipes 3 times

My first recipe of choice is Portobello Parmesan. It is one tasty treat of mushrooms, marinara and cheese. Quick and easy with the added bonuses that it is vegetarian AND the Husband likes it. Yippee! I have already cooked it twice. Once more and it is officially a staple.

#43: Participate in the 365 Days project (one self-portrait a day).

I have been on a role at 17/365 days. I started the same day that I started this list. Still a long way to go, but if you want to check out my progress, go look at my Flickr account.

Day1

#47: Take one photo a month of the Husband.

Already shot him for September and October. Usually he is in a photo with me. :)

#51: Exercise for 6 days per week for 6 weeks. & #59: Drink 8 glasses of water a day for 2 weeks.

I have just started tracking both of these for the month of October. So far I am 2 out of 2 days!

#63: Get 5 stars on a hard song on Guitar Hero

On my very first try today, I got a 5 Star on HARD on Strutter. Pretty sweet!

Guitar Hero: 5 Star on Hard

#64: Throw out or donate clothes that no longer fit or are worn out. & #65: Reduce the number of shoes, purses and bags that I own by 50%.

My Clothes and shoes have been taken care of… with purses and bags left!

#71: Keep track of all spending for 3 months.

Started tracking this month.

#72: Keep track of grocery shopping for 3 weeks.

Only one more week left for this to be considered complete, but I might have to extend it to have enough data to actually do anything. I am hoping to see some trends and why I am always spending so much money. I think it has to do with the fact that the only “meat” I eat is fish and I must have fresh fruits and veggies. Maybe less fish, more beans and adding in some frozen with the fresh?

#75: Get up when the alarm goes off the FIRST time for one month.

Once again, I am 2 for 2 during the month of October.

#91: Blog about each of my 101 things as they are done.

That is what I am doing now, silly!

#92: Stay off the internet for 24 hours straight once a week for a month.

No internet Sept. 28th at 1pm until Sept 29th at 11pm. Lets see if I can do this for 3 more weeks!

Well kids, those are all my updates. I will continue to keep you updated as things are completed or worked on!

During my internet pursuits, I have run across this really cool concept: complete 101 tasks in 1001 days. Sounds daunting. It is daunting. But I am giving it a go any way. Expect status reports along the way! Here is the concept (from Day Zero):

The Mission:
Complete 101 preset tasks in a period of 1001 days.

The Criteria:
Tasks must be specific (ie. no ambiguity in the wording) with a result that is either measurable or clearly defined. Tasks must also be realistic and stretching (ie. represent some amount of work on my part).

Why 1001 Days?
Many people have created lists in the past - frequently simple goals such as New Year’s resolutions. The key to beating procrastination is to set a deadline that is realistic. 1001 Days (about 2.75 years) is a better period of time than a year, because it allows you several seasons to complete the tasks, which is better for organizing and timing some tasks such as overseas trips or outdoor activities.
